Article: Why Some Clients Never Retain Lashes Well

Why Some Clients Never Retain Lashes Well

Let’s talk about something every lash artist has dealt with at least once—and if you haven’t yet, just wait.

You do a flawless set with clean isolation mapping that’s totally on point. Your glue is performing as it should, and your client leaves looking like a million bucks… and then two days later? You get a dm stating, “Hey… my lashes are all gone.” For real, that’s what we call frustration.

Welcome to the world of lash retention problems, where sometimes it’s not your work… it’s everything around it. Sometimes it’s the client, their body, their habits, their lifestyle—basically a whole mix of things that can jeopardize retention real quick. But maybe we can do something about it? At least, get rid of that grudge of guilt eating you alive.

Common Causes of Poor Retention

Here’s the truth that may come as a surprise and a bit painful: not all clients are built for long-lasting lashes. Some people can keep a set looking fresh for three weeks like it’s nothing. Others? Lashes start clocking out early like office workers on a Friday evening.

And it’s not random. There’s always a reason and lots of client retention factors.

The Natural Lash Growth Cycle (a.k.a. Mother Nature Doing Her Thing)

First things first - natural lash shedding is inevitable. No exceptions. Simply, lashes go through phases:

  • growth (anagen)
  • transition (catagen)
  • resting/shedding (telogen)

So when a lash falls out with the extension attached, that’s not “bad retention.” That’s biology doing its 9-to-5.

Some clients just have a faster cycle. Their lashes are basically like: “Alright, we did well here… time to go and rest.”

And there’s nothing you can do to stop that. You can’t fight nature—it’s like arguing with the weather. You can complain, but it’s still gonna rain.

Hormones: The Silent Chaos Agents

Now this one is sneaky. Hormones affect everything—skin, hair, nails, mood, and lash retention. No exceptions here, though we would want that.

Clients who are:

  • pregnant
  • on birth control
  • dealing with thyroid issues
  • going through stress or hormonal shifts

…might notice their lashes just don’t stick the same. Well, they might hold, but don’t bet your paycheck on it.

Clients don’t always connect the dots. They’ll say: “My retention used to be amazing, what happened?”. They start thinking that something in your routine has changed, or you just used cheap materials. The sad part is that they don't always share their concerns with you and just go elsewhere. Meanwhile, their body is going through a whole internal remix.

Medications & Health Factors

Some medications can mess with retention like a glitch in the system. It’s common that people face something like that:

  • acne treatments
  • hormonal meds
  • certain prescriptions that affect oil production or hair growth

Also—health conditions matter. If the body is under stress, lash health takes a hit. Imagine your client struggles with work burnout, but instead, you’re the one to blame. Disappointing, right. No matter how hard you try during the appointment, their lashes aren’t a priority for their body. Survival comes first. Lashes? They’re just along for the ride.

Lifestyle Habits

This one’s big. Clients who:

  • hit the gym daily
  • use saunas or steam rooms
  • have oily skin
  • sleep face-down

…are basically playing a lash retention game. And the mode is set to “Nightmare”. You can do a perfect set, but if they’re living like that? It’s gonna be a losing game. That’s why it’s good to build a trusted relationship. They share, you communicate, and they trust your judgement. That it’s not just a try to cover for yourself, it’s a genuine concern about the result you worked so hard for. And their satisfaction as well.

Aftercare Mistakes Clients Make

Now we’re entering the danger zone. Because let’s be honest—half the time, poor retention reasons come down to lash aftercare mistakes. And some clients treat aftercare like optional DLC content. It’s not optional.

1. Oil-Based Products (The Ultimate Villain)
Oil breaks down the adhesive. Period. So when a client says: “I only used a little oil cleanser…” Yeah. That’s all it takes. Oil and lash glue go together like cats and water. It’s not happening peacefully.

2. Rubbing Eyes Like It’s a Stress Ball
Not-so-fun fact: life is stressful. But lashes are not built to survive aggressive eye rubbing. Every time a client rubs their eyes, their lashes are under major stress. And off they go.

3. Heat & Steam: Low-Key Sabotage
Long hot showers. Steam rooms. Cooking over a stove like they’re starring in a Ratatouille reboot. So yeah, retention is gonna take a hit.

4. Skipping Cleansing
Some clients think avoiding water means better retention. Wrong. It’s like trying to build a house on a shaky foundation. So cleansing is a must for them at least 3 times a week. But less is not more in this case. Daily cleansing - that’s what we aim for.

Choosing the Right Technique and Material

Alright, even though a lot is out of your control, your technique still matters. A lot.

- Curl matters more than you think.
Not every lash curl works for every client. If the curl doesn’t match the natural lash direction, you’re basically forcing a relationship that doesn’t fit. And what happens when something doesn’t fit? It doesn’t last.

- Diameter & Weight
Going too heavy is not a smart choice. Clients with fine lashes need lighter extensions. Period.

- Adhesive Choice
Different environments = different adhesive behavior. If your adhesive isn’t working with your environment, well, the whole thing is pointless from the start.

How to Set Realistic Expectations

Now here’s the part that separates the pros from the amateurs. Because sometimes, no matter what you do… retention will never be perfect for certain clients. And instead of chasing rainbows, you need to set the tone early.

  • Be Honest (But Make It Professional)

If a client has oily skin, fast lash cycle, or hormonal factors - tell them straight up (nicely, obviously):
“Your retention might be shorter than average.” No sugarcoating, no false promises. Because overpromising and underdelivering? That’s how you lose trust.

  • Reframe the Goal

Shift it to maintaining the look with regular fills instead of them expecting to rock their lashes for a month and a half. Because eye lashes extension aren’t a one-and-done deal, it’s maintenance.

  • Build a Game Plan

For clients with chronic lash retention problems, suggest more frequent fills, lighter lash sets and stricter aftercare.

Real-Life Scenario

You’ve got two clients.

Client A:

  • follows aftercare

  • normal lash cycle

  • low oil production

Her lashes? Last like a champ.

Client B:

  • works out daily

  • uses oil cleanser

  • sleeps face-down

  • has hormonal effects on lashes

Her lashes? Gone in a week.

Same artist. Same products. Completely different results. That’s lash retention in a nutshell.

It’s Not Always You

Not every retention issue is your fault. Sometimes it’s biology, lifestyle, habits, or straight-up bad luck. Your job is to apply correctly, educate clearly, and set expectations early. After that? The ball’s in the client’s court. Because at the end of the day, it takes two to tango, and lash extensions are a team effort. You do your part, they do theirs.

And if they don’t? Well… you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it stop rubbing its eyes and using oil cleanser at midnight.

Stay sharp, stay honest, and don’t let one bad retention client make you question your skills.
